In recent years, Eritrea has been lazily compared to North Korea in Africa. The answer is no, I believe. Although this proud nation state lacks the political freedoms that seemed so precious at independence, it has much more to offer than its current isolationist leadership. It is fascinating to witness the colonial architecture and cultural heritage of Asmara, as well as the jarringly different feeling of Keren, which today is more influenced by the Sudan than Italy. Massawa, which has access to the Red Sea, is Eritrea’s future. It is difficult to imagine the future even with stifling humidity and languid decay. Eritreans desire change while acknowledging their debt to the heroes of the War of Independence. As a result of the process of rapprochement with Ethiopia, the conflict has officially ended. We offer tours in Eritrea and in combination with other countries in the Horn of Africa. Through these tours, travelers will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of one of the world’s most proud, resilient, and historically fascinating nations. In addition to being one of the world’s best preserved examples of Art Deco architecture, Asmara is also one of the most incongruous places on earth. Dahlak Islands offer excellent diving and fascinating marine life, while Red Sea towns such as Massawa provide a glimpse of Ottoman heritage.
